Tatum’s Treehouse Project Now Open to Interested Communities

SALINAS, CA (February 22, 2019) – The Tatum’s Garden Foundation announced that they are reopening the Tatum’s Treehouse project for interested cities and communities in Monterey County. “Tatum’s Treehouse” was originally designed to be built in Toro County Park in partnership with Monterey County using the Foundation’s community-build model.

Several years into the project to build Tatum’s Treehouse at Toro Park, the County notified the Foundation that there were restrictions to the community-build model, which were created when the federal government gifted Toro Park to Monterey County. Once the Foundation learned of these restrictions, it unanimously decided to stop its pursuit of Toro Park as the location of Tatum’s Treehouse and to pause to consider its options.

“We were very disappointed to have to put our project on hold after so much time, effort and community input went into this beautiful design.  Looking ahead, we know that there is a perfect location somewhere in Monterey County that can become the home of Tatum’s Treehouse.  We are excited to move forward and to bring the gift of accessible, inclusive to play to many more families in our county,” says Amanda Bakker, President of the Tatum’s Garden Foundation.

During this pause, the Board received numerous inquiries from cities and communities interesting in implementing the Tatum’s Treehouse design. To avoid facing major delays or hurdles late in the process, the Foundation developed a Request for Information (RFI) to share with any interested parties in Monterey County. This RFI was shared with all parties that had previously inquired about Tatum’s Treehouse on Friday, February 15th.

The Tatum’s Garden Foundation is now opening up this RFI to any other interested parties in Monterey County, now through March 15, 2019. After the RFI has closed, the Tatum’s Garden Foundation will review all inquiries to determine the best fit, while assisting these cities and communities in building and developing fully accessible playgrounds as appropriate.
